Overview

Lewis Roca Rothgerber Christie LLP, an Am Law 200 firm, represented a large construction company in a dispute with a major subcontractor. The construction company was suing the subcontractor for failure to perform and meet project requirements.

The Challenge:

Complex Construction Litigation with Time and Budget Constraints

In complex construction litigation it is critical to be thorough. When litigation involves large amounts of data, the primary cost is attorney review time, which can be unpredictable and balloon quickly.

The end client provided Lewis Roca with over 600,000 documents (800 GB of data) that needed to be reviewed in a short time frame under a limited discovery budget. The variety of complex construction files and technical documents (CAD, PST, project files, etc) meant a more challenging document review. The firm’s existing eDiscovery solutions were not well equipped for the size and complexity of data. Moreover, the third party analytics tool required moving case data back and forth between analytics tools. They needed a new approach to automate eDiscovery steps processes and better Legal AI to automate data analysis and be able to reduce document review time and meet client goals.

The Solution:

Casepoint Artificial Intelligence Eliminates Over 90% of Non-Relevant Documents

Robert Roos, esteemed Partner at Lewis Roca, weighed their existing review capabilities against their client’s need for fast, accurate document review with budget constraints. He knew a technology solution would give his client, and his team, the best chance to meet the timeline and budget goals. After an in-depth evaluation, Lewis Roca selected Casepoint’s eDiscovery technology for its award-winning AI, experience with complex data types, and historical success with construction litigation.

Caitlin McHugh, Partner and eDiscovery technology expert on the case, worked closely with Casepoint’s project management team to optimize their utilization of Casepoint’s artificial intelligence suite, CaseAssist. Casepoint Client Success Manager and expert TAR consultant answered questions and provided workflow recommendations to identify relevant and non-relevant documents within the dataset. By doing so, Lewis Roca was able to efficiently eliminate over 90% of the documents, to reduce document review time compared to initial forecasts. They met their tight deadlines and reduced the time to complete discovery.

The Outcome:

Legal AI Drives Efficiency eDiscovery and Better Client Outcomes

Lewis Roca’s strategic decision to partner with Casepoint achieved a more successful and cost-effective outcome for their client. Leveraging built-in legal AI, TAR tools and expert project management sped the eDiscovery process. “Our Casepoint Project Manager was able to advise us and work in partnership with us to leverage the CaseAssist Active Learning functionality in the best way possible, and to ensure that we were getting the outcomes we wanted,”adds Caitlin McHugh, Partner at Lewis Roca. This allowed the legal team to spend more time on developing case strategy and providing better client value at greatly reduced legal costs.

Lewis Roca’s end client witnessed huge cost savings (compared to initial forecasts) as the case team was able to find and focus on relevant data and reduce document review time. Casepoint’s AI saved Lewis Roca valuable time on a big legal matter, met timelines, and ultimately saved their client a significant amount of money.

New call-to-action

We looked at several different products and ultimately, we chose Casepoint. One main reason is because of its CaseAssist Active Learning feature. Another was the superior functionality of reviewing construction-specific documents and file types based on our research of other products.
